Photographer Craig Wetjen started with an idea: to showcase the private relationship between a man and his shed – a place where the pressure of time is erased, where conversation is easy, and the stories that are shared are inspirational and life affirming. Spending hours getting to know his subjects, Craig soon recognised that these conversations were not only helping him, but helping others too, by bringing insight and awareness to the men about their mental and physical health. The unspoken is that a shed is also a place of refuge from depression, loneliness and isolation.
Travelling thousands of kilometres across Australia to find his subjects, Craig discovered that among the discord of chaos, the men found order; that as well as being places for tinkering and repurposing, and occasionally housing priceless vintage car or pinball machine collections, some of the sheds are museum pieces in their own right.
